Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information Agon collects, how that information is used and shared, and the choices available to you.

1. Who we are

Agon is operated by Sasha Cadariu, as an individual.

2. Age requirement

Agon is intended for users aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. Every account holder certifies for themselves that they are at least 18 years of age — on the registration page when creating an account with an access code, or at first sign-in for an account a teacher created directly — and that certification is recorded. The rule is the same whatever your role and however your account came to exist.

If you believe someone under 18 has created an account, contact contact@agon-ai.org and we will remove the account and its associated data.

3. Information we collect

Account information. Your first name, last name, and email address. Accounts are created with an access code — teachers receive theirs from us, students from their teacher (teachers can also add a student directly). We record which code an account was created with, and the consent and age certification given at registration or at first sign-in.

Conversation content. The messages you send to Agon and the responses Agon returns. If you edit a message you have sent, the earlier version is retained: it leaves the conversation, not the record. Edited-away messages are excluded from the working conversation and from what Agon reads, but they remain stored, are included (marked as revised) in your own data download, and the fact that revisions were made — though not their content — is noted in the session's summary.

Customization and learning goals. If you choose to fill in the "Customize Agon" page, we store what you enter there: a description of how you learn, strengths and weaknesses as you see them, and your learning goals — which may apply across all your courses or to one course. The description and self-described strengths and weaknesses are used only to shape how Agon works with you in conversation; they are deliberately excluded from the process that builds your learning record, so your own account of yourself can never colour what Agon reports having observed. Goals are used both in conversation and in your learning record, where your progress against them is assessed. All of this is yours to edit or delete at any time from the same page.

Uploaded documents. The text contained in files you or your teacher upload. Course materials are stored in an indexed form so that Agon can reference them, and the original uploaded file is also retained so that materials can be re-processed without asking a teacher to upload them again. Filenames are retained so that teachers can see which materials they have uploaded. Original files are private: they are readable only through the account of the teacher who owns the course, and they are deleted when the material or the course is deleted.

Session and mode information. Conversations are grouped into sessions. For each message we record which of the available working modes you had selected at the time, and for each session the mode you were last using.

Summaries and a learning record. When a session ends, we store a written summary of it. Those summaries are then combined into a learning record for you in that course: what you appear to understand, how that has changed over the sessions, how independently you have been working, and what you left unfinished. These are stored, not produced fresh each time they are looked at, and they persist after the summary that contributed to them is gone. They are derived from your conversations; they are not a copy of them.

Technical information. Your IP address, recorded when an account is created, and used to limit automated abuse of the registration process.

Access credentials. Your access token is not stored. We retain only a one-way cryptographic hash of it. Neither we nor any third party can recover your token from our records. A lost token cannot be retrieved and must be replaced.

4. How we use information

We use the information described above to:

• operate Agon and generate responses to your messages;
• generate learning insights for the teacher who administers your course;
• deliver access credentials by email;
• maintain the security and integrity of the service.

Teachers receive learning insights, which describe topics engaged with, apparent areas of stronger and weaker understanding, and patterns of use. Teachers do not have access to conversation transcripts.

We draw inferences about your understanding. Agon does not only summarise what was discussed. From what you write, it forms judgements about how well you appear to understand a topic, how your reasoning is organised, and how closely your own sense of your understanding matches what you demonstrate. These judgements shape how Agon works with you — what it asks next, how much support it offers, when it moves on — and they are included in the insights your teacher receives. They are estimates drawn from conversation, not measurements, and each is reported to your teacher with an indication of how well supported it is.

The mode you choose affects how your session is interpreted. Behaviour that is expected in one mode may be noted in another. For example, asking for help before attempting something is expected when you are exploring unfamiliar material, and is read differently when you are revising material you have already met.

Your learning record shapes your later sessions. Agon reads a short form of it when you return to a course, and uses it to decide where to begin and what to ask. It is treated as a starting assumption to be tested against what you actually do, not as a settled account of you.

Asking you questions changes what you remember. Agon is designed to prompt recall and explanation rather than to observe passively, so the act of assessing your understanding is also part of teaching you.

You can see your own learning record. Each course's learning record has a view written for you — how you learn, how you think, strengths and areas to work on that Agon has observed (each with an indication of how firmly it is supported and why), and your progress against the goals you have set. You can read it, refresh it, and download it from the "Customize Agon" page at any time. It is a rendering of the same record your teacher's insights are drawn from, written for you rather than about you; some material generated for your teacher's professional use, such as the analytic apparatus behind an observation, is not part of your view. Agon does not recite the record in conversation — it acts on it there, and the page is where it speaks — which is a pedagogical design decision: a conversation spent discussing the account kept of you would be a conversation spent working on the account rather than on the material.

Teachers' own conversations. Teachers can talk to Agon directly to check how their course is configured. Those conversations are recorded and kept as part of the teacher's own record. They are never treated as student activity and are never used to generate insights about anyone.

We do not sell personal information. We do not use conversation content for advertising. We do not use conversation content to train artificial intelligence models.

5. Service providers

Agon relies on the following providers, each of which processes information on our behalf and stores it in the United States:

We do not disclose personal information to any other third party except where required by law.

6. Data retention

Conversation records are retained while the associated course remains active. Deleting a course deletes the conversation records, course materials, and the summaries and learning records derived from them.

Summaries and learning records are kept until they are deleted or rebuilt. Deleting a session deletes its summary. It does not by itself change a learning record that was already built: that record continues to reflect the session until it is next rebuilt, at which point the deleted session no longer contributes to it.

Every course has an end date. Your teacher sets it, to a maximum of twelve months from the course's start, and it cannot be removed or set to "never". After that date, the conversations, session summaries and learning records for that course are deleted. Deletion runs once a day, so it happens on the day after the end date rather than at the moment it passes. Agon can tell you your course's end date if you ask it.

Teachers are able to download insight reports. A downloaded report resides on the recipient's device and is outside our control. Deletion of information held by us does not extend to copies previously downloaded.

7. Data security

Access credentials are stored only as one-way hashes. Sessions are managed using signed tokens transmitted in HTTP-only cookies. Access to course data is restricted by role and by course enrolment.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

8. Your choices

You can download your conversations at any time, from the "My data" link in Agon. The file contains every message you have sent and every reply, grouped by session. You do not need to ask anyone for it.

You can see and download your learning record at any time, from the "Customize Agon" page, one course at a time — you do not need to ask anyone for it. Because you can now read it directly, the right to correct it is directly exercisable: if anything in it strikes you as wrong, contact your teacher or email contact@agon-ai.org and ask for it to be reviewed. Session summaries themselves are not self-serve; to request those, use the same routes.

You control your customization data. Everything on the "Customize Agon" page — your description, self-described strengths and weaknesses, and goals — can be edited or deleted by you directly, and takes effect from your next message.

You may also request access to any other information we hold about you, request correction of inaccurate information, or request deletion of your information, through the same routes.

Deletion removes your conversation history and the summaries and learning record derived from it. It does not affect course materials supplied by your teacher.

You can edit the most recent message you sent. Editing replaces that exchange in the conversation: Agon answers the revised message, and neither you nor Agon sees the earlier version in the conversation again. The earlier version is retained in the stored record, marked as revised, and appears in your data download — editing changes the conversation, not the record.

You cannot delete your own sessions from within Agon. This is deliberate. The record of your work is what your teacher relies on, and a record you could remove at will would not be one they could depend on. Requests to delete your information are handled by the route above.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Where a change materially affects you, we will request your acknowledgement the next time you sign in. The effective date above indicates when this version took effect.
