Accessibility Statement

Sasha Cadariu is committed to making Agon accessible to people with disabilities. This statement describes the accessibility of Agon and how to report barriers.

Conformance status

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define requirements for making web content more accessible to people with disabilities.

Agon is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Partially conformant means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard.

Measures to support accessibility

We have taken the following measures:

  • Colour combinations throughout the interface have been measured against WCAG AA contrast requirements and adjusted where they did not meet them.
  • All controls can be operated using a keyboard alone, and the focus position is visible at all times.
  • Dialogs retain keyboard focus while open, close with the Escape key, and return focus to the control that opened them.
  • Form fields have associated labels, and buttons that display only an icon have text descriptions for assistive technology.
  • New messages and processing states are announced by screen readers as they occur.
  • Animation is disabled when the operating system indicates a preference for reduced motion.
  • Pages use structural headings and native controls rather than styled substitutes.

Accessibility is considered when new features are designed and reviewed before release.

Known limitations

Despite our efforts, some limitations remain. Below is a description of known limitations and, where applicable, what we are doing about them.

  1. Long responses cannot be skipped. Agon's replies may be lengthy, and there is currently no control to move directly past one. We intend to add this.
  2. Scanned PDFs are not readable. Where a teacher uploads a PDF consisting of scanned images without a text layer, its contents are unavailable to Agon and to screen readers alike. We advise teachers to upload documents containing selectable text.
  3. The teacher dashboard has received less testing than the sign-in and chat pages, and may contain barriers we have not yet identified. It is scheduled for further review. The same applies to the course testing page available to teachers, which is newer still.
  4. Mode names may not be self-explanatory. One of the working modes is called "Devil's advocate", an English idiom whose meaning may not be evident to every reader. A short description accompanies each mode, but the names themselves have not been simplified.
  5. Retrieved course material is shown as raw extracted text. On the teacher testing page, passages drawn from uploaded documents are displayed as extracted, which can include page furniture and broken sentences. This affects everyone reading it, and more so anyone relying on a screen reader.

Assessment approach

Agon was assessed by self-evaluation. Assessment consisted of code review and programmatic measurement of colour contrast and interface semantics. Agon has not been assessed by an external organisation, and testing with screen reading software has been limited.

Interface controls added since the previous version — the working-mode selector, the session list and its rename control, and the teacher course testing page — were assessed the same way. Contrast of every new text and background pairing was measured against the 4.5:1 threshold, keyboard operability was verified by code review, and changes of state are announced to assistive technology. Automated accessibility scanning of the running application has not been performed.

We intend to broaden testing, including evaluation with assistive technologies in regular use.
